Two-sided Cake/Springerle Board with Adam and Eve Carving

$600.00 USD

The Germanic tradition of using carved boards as molds for cookies was brought to this country with the great influx of immigrants in the 18th and 19th Centuries.  These were used primarily by professional bakers who were also trained to carve the various shapes.  This baking was usually associated with Christmas and New Years.

This double-sided board is 19 1/2" long and 5 3/8" wide and has four different subjects carved on the two sides.  Side #1 has Adam and Eve under the apple tree and a cow being milked.  Side #2 has a horse and a finely dressed couple.  The Adam and Eve form supports an early date when religious themes were more common.

The hand carving is well done and reinforces an early date.  Late 19th Century cake boards tended to be machine carved.

Condition is good with an age split starting from one end and "hang" or mounting holes added to each end.

Price includes domestic shipping.
