Paint Decorated Watch Hutch in the Dutch Style

$325.00 USD

This early watch hutch is paint decorated over a stain in the Dutch form popular for tall clocks and suggests it was made in the New York area in the first half of the 19th Century.  It measures 14 5/8" tall by 5" wide and 2 1/4" deep.

The watch hutch, in various forms, adorned most homes in the 18th and 19th Centuries as pocket watches were best kept wound and in the vertical position at night.  The watch hutch was the forerunner to the bedroom alarm clock.

The entire front piece opens to expose the "hour-glass" shape of the interior.  The maker included a mortise lock (the key has gone missing).  There is a clip at the top of the interior to hang a pocket watch.

The subtle paint decoration has various floral motifs including trees and leaves and the center of lower section has a classical lyre in green and white.  The sides of the case have traces of a gold pin-striping that defined the various curved panels.  The lower section has a round frosted glass piece at its center.

Condition is good with good structural integrity but some scuffs and abrasions to the exterior surfaces and some paint chipping to the interior paint.  The top decorative piece has a shrinkage crack.

The pocket watch in the photos is not included.

The price includes $25 to cover packing, shipping and insurance.
