Mortar and Pestle in Lignum Vitae

$375.00 USD

Lignum Vitae was an early trade wood found principally in the Caribbean and northern South America, prized for its strength, toughness and density.  It is most commonly associated with mortars and pestles and carvers' mallets but was also used to make woodworking tools for its great strength and self lubricating properties.

This elegantly turned mortar and pestle set in lignum vitae is large, the mortar measuring 6 3/4" tall and 6" in diameter. The pestle is 10 1/4" long with a barrel diameter of 2 1/4".  Together they weigh about five and a half pounds.

The mortar is rich dark brown with characteristic areas of medium brown.  The pestle is a very dark brown throughout.

The mortar has the start of an age crack on the exterior along with a small area partially split out.  Please see the photo detail.  The pestle has a chip out of the top knob and some smaller chips out of the barrel.

An estimated $25 is included in the price to cove packing, shipping and insurance.
