"Haint" Blue Mantel and Fireplace Surround

$1,950.00 USD

This fireplace surround came out of a cottage on Sapelo Island off the coast of Gerogia, once owned by descendants of Low Country slaves.  It is painted in "haint" blue, a color used on architectural elements by the Gullah to mimic the appearance of water to ward off spirits from the home.  Like so many other aspects of Gullah culture "haint" blue has African roots.

The mantel measures 53" tall and 51" wide.  The mantel itself is 55" wide.  The fireplace opening measures 34" tall and 39 1/4" wide.  It likely dates to the turn of the 19th Century.

Structural integrity is good.  There are no losses or repairs.  The original "haint" blue surface is well worn.  Fortunately, no attempt has been made to restore the surface.

We love to color, natural patina and wonderful story of the piece.  It deserves a good home.

Due to size and weight we will quote shipping costs at the time of your interest.
