Copper Quill Weathervane with Traces of Original Gilt

$6,000.00 USD

This is the classic quill weathervane form representing scholarship and found flying over libraries, schools, newspapers, publishing houses, etc.  This example measures 36" long and is 19 3/4" tall on its contemporary museum stand.  It likely dates to the late 19th Century.

In 1704 the Reverend Edward Taylor (1642-1729) wrote:

Ye angels bright, pluck from your Wings a Quill:

Make me a pen thereof that best will write:

Lende me your fancy and Angellick skill

To treat this Theme, more rich than rubies bright.

Condition is excellent with no losses and no repairs.  The original gilt surface has worn to expose an appealing weathered verdigris surface.  A good amount  of the original gilt remains.

It is becoming difficult to find weathervanes of this age in such wonderful condition.

An estimated $50 is included in the price to cover packing, shipping and insurance.
