Carved Golliwog Hearth Broom

$465.00 USD

This wonderfully expressive hearth broom is carved in mahogany and attributed to Biltmore Industries.

From an article "Brush up your bristles" on the Maine Maritime Museum website, "(The) Golliwog Hearth Broom (was) manufactured in Asheville, NC by Biltmore Industries sometime before 1930.  The Vanderbilts founded this American offshoot of the William Morris Arts & Crafts movement in 1905 near their Biltmore estate; it evolved primarily into a hand-loomed textile operation and continues weaving blankets today"

This example lacks the holes and brush bristles.  It measures 19 1/4" long and 5" wide.  It was likely part of their in-process inventory when the product line was dropped in 1930.

This is an excellent example of early 20th Century folk art.

An estimated $15 is included in the price to cover packing, shipping and insurance.
