19th Century School Girl Sampler

$925.00 USD

This traditional 19th Century sampler is by Agnes Thornton, Aged 12.

Agnes did a good job composing the canvas and filling it with a variety of images- A house surrounded by trees, birds, squirrels, flowers, two hunters with their dogs in pursuit of deer, two candelabra and others.  The border is nicely done in a repeating scallop-like pattern.  Agnes chose the motto "A Friend loveth at all times."  She put in the century numbers of the date, "18" but forgot to give us the year.

The overall size is 22" wide by 23" tall.  Sight is 16 5/8 wide by 17 3/4" tall.

We found the sampler in Maine in this lovely scalloped, walnut frame, which is likely original.  The sampler was removed from the frame, professionally cleaned, and replaced with the original glass but a new acid free mat and backing.

The sampler condition is very good with no losses and minimal staining.  There is some fading to the stitches in a few colors.  The frame has some minor damage to the corners.

An estimated $75 is included in the price to cover packing, shipping and insurance.
