19th Century Grain Painted Document/Writing Box

$575.00 USD

This is the kind of piece that gets overlooked at most auctions because time and grime had obscured the grain painting.  We had the box professionally cleaned and the result is stunning.  The walnut faux finish is on pine.

This started out as a hinged document or writing box, having the characteristic angled profile when fully open.  Too big to be used as a lap box, this was likely kept in a prominent place in the home or office.  Along the way the infrastructure was removed and the green wallpaper with grape clusters was added.  In one corner you can feel the round depression under the wallpaper where the ink well was kept.  The original mortise lock remains but the key is missing.

The box measures 11 3/4" deep by 20" wide and 6 3/4" tall in the closed position.

We found this box in New Hampshire and believe it is a New England piece, possibly from Maine.

This is likely the best example of grain painting that we have handled in a long time.

An additional $25 is included in the price to cover shipping and insurance.
